Our Mission — Honest Cannabis Information for Veterans

CannabisVeterans.org exists to provide evidence-grounded cannabis information for U.S. military veterans, their families, and VA healthcare providers. We are not affiliated with cannabis companies, dispensaries, or advocacy organizations. We do not sell products. We do not accept advertising from cannabis vendors. Our content is sourced to peer-reviewed research and primary government documents, with honest evaluation of evidence quality.

What We Do and Do Not

We do: evaluate evidence honestly, cite primary sources, tell you when we do not know, respect your ability to make informed decisions, prioritize safety. We do not: sell cannabis products, accept cannabis industry funding, advocate for or against cannabis use, offer medical or legal advice, claim to replace your VA provider.

Why This Site Exists

Veterans deserve honest answers about cannabis. Not marketing. Not dismissive skepticism. Not false hope. The existing information landscape for veteran cannabis use is divided into two problematic camps:

  • Promotional content that overstates benefits, ignores risks, and is often produced by or for the cannabis industry
  • Dismissive content that exaggerates risks, ignores legitimate use cases, and treats cannabis as inherently harmful without engaging with actual evidence

Neither camp serves veterans well. Veterans with PTSD, chronic pain, sleep disturbance, or other common conditions need information that is accurate, complete, and honest about uncertainty. That is what we try to provide.

What We Cover

  • VA cannabis policy — what VHA Directive 1315 actually says, what VA providers can and cannot do, and why
  • Medical evidence — what peer-reviewed research actually shows for PTSD, chronic pain, sleep, anxiety, TBI, and other veteran-relevant conditions
  • Benefits and rights — how cannabis use does (and does not) affect VA benefits, disability ratings, and confidentiality protections
  • Federal employment and security clearances — what state legalization does and does not change
  • State programs — comprehensive state-by-state guide with veteran-specific provisions
  • Practical guidance — finding providers, costs, drug interactions, travel restrictions, dispensary basics
  • Treatment and crisis — VA treatment options, crisis resources, cannabis use disorder
  • History and advocacy — the Vietnam-to-today arc, PTSD diagnosis history, post-9/11 opioid crisis
  • Legislation and federal policy — Veterans Equal Access Act, DEA rescheduling, SAFE Banking

Our Commitments

Honest Evidence Evaluation

Where research suggests something, we say "research suggests." Where research demonstrates something, we say "research demonstrates." Where evidence is contested, we say so. Where evidence is absent, we say so. We do not inflate weak findings to support conclusions or dismiss strong findings that complicate our preferred narrative.

Primary Source Citations

Major claims are cited to peer-reviewed research (with PMID links where available), primary government documents, or authoritative policy sources. You can verify what we write and form your own evaluation of the underlying evidence.

Transparency About Uncertainty

Cannabis research has significant limitations. The research base is skewed by decades of Schedule I restrictions, the NIDA monopoly on research cannabis (1968–2021), the difficulty of placebo-controlling cannabis studies, and the politicization of the research questions. We acknowledge these limitations rather than pretending certainty where it does not exist.

Independence From Commercial Interests

We are not funded by cannabis companies, dispensaries, or the cannabis industry in any form. We do not accept advertising from cannabis vendors. We do not sell cannabis products. We are part of the TryCannabis.org Cannabis Education Network, which operates on the same principles.

Respect for Veteran Autonomy

We provide information so that veterans can make their own decisions. We do not tell you to use cannabis or to abstain. We do not tell you what to think about cannabis policy. We give you the best information we can assemble and trust you to weigh it against your own situation, values, and priorities.

Who We Are Not

  • Not a cannabis company. We do not sell, produce, or distribute cannabis products.
  • Not a dispensary or retailer. We do not recommend specific dispensaries or products.
  • Not an advocacy organization. We do not lobby for or against specific legislation.
  • Not a medical provider. Nothing on this site constitutes medical advice. Consult your VA provider or other qualified healthcare professional for clinical questions.
  • Not a legal provider. Nothing on this site constitutes legal advice. Consult an attorney for specific legal questions about your situation.
  • Not a substitute for VA care. We support the VA healthcare system and encourage veterans to engage with VA for their clinical needs. We do not replace your VA provider.

The Larger Network

CannabisVeterans.org is part of the TryCannabis.org Cannabis Education Network, which includes complementary sites focused on different aspects of cannabis education:

  • TryCannabis.org — general cannabis education
  • CannaScience.org — cannabis pharmacology and science
  • CannabisDependence.org — cannabis use disorder and cutting back
  • CannabisVeterans.org — this site, for veterans

Each site operates independently but shares the same core principles: honest evidence, primary sources, no product sales, no industry funding.
